Technologies. Large Wind Turbine Solutions. Gearless Variable-Speed Power Generation
Indeed, as larger turbines become more mechanically complex, the advantages of the VWS-X Series technology - enabled by high-capacity VRS technology - become even more pronounced. Designed specifically for improved output in low and variable-speed winds, the VWS-X Series based on AC synchronous (squirrel cage) generators is the ideal solution for turbines intended for locations with low and variable-speed winds.
The VRS integrated into the VWS-X Series manipulates the intensity of the generator's magnetic field in response to changes in wind speed using a proprietary methodology and algorithm. Accordingly, the generator's magnetic field is able to "absorb" fluctuations in RPMs (or wind speed) of over 60% above or below the generator's nominal RPM rating. Working together, the VRS, generator, and power conditioning/grid-synchronization electronics are able to operate at high efficiency in all wind regimes, with noticeable improvements in output in low and variable-speed winds. For more information on the VRS, see the VRS Spec Sheet.
The VWS-X Series is based on AC synchronous (squirrel cage) generators that deliver higher power output per pound/kilogram compared to PMGs. While the VWS-X Series is slightly longer than an equivalent-output PMG, it has a small diameter and weighs less. As a result, the tower loading, and nacelle and mast weights, are reduced.
As the wind speed changes, the generator's magnetic field absorbs the fluctuations in generator shaft RPMs across a wide range of RPMs. There is therefore no need for multi-ratio gearboxes, blade pitch-control mechanisms, and/or other electro-mechanical methods typically used to stabilize generator shaft RPMs to achieve the highest possible efficiency. Eliminating these complex systems increases overall system reliability and therefore reduces maintenance.
The VWS-X Series can be integrated into new OEM turbines, as well as older turbines being upgraded, retrofitted, or refurbished. To discuss your specific needs or for more information about the VWS-X Series technology for medium and large wind turbines, please contact us. |

The same technology used in the VWS-X Series of small wind turbine solutions is no less relevant for larger wind turbines in the 100's of kW.
